First Grade News

May News

This month in Science, my class will be studying the continent of Africa and the many animals that live there. Our F.G.I. Project will focus on African animals, and will be due on June 1st.  This will be the final F.G.I. Project of the school year.

In Reading we are finishing Book #4 in our Trophies reading series, and will begin Book #5 next week.  This is the final book of first grade.  The students are still doing a fantastic job in our individualized reading program.  My class has read a total of 205 books and we’re still going strong!  My class will be given the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test on May 14th.  This standardized test focuses on phonics, vocabulary and reading comprehension.  The children are required to read multiple sentences without my help, and then select pictures that match the text.

In Math we are busy counting money, and will begin our study on “telling time” shortly.  We are also continuing to practice our addition and subtraction facts.

In Phonics we are working on long vowel sounds, and in Grammar we are learning about nouns, verbs, capitalization, punctuation, contractions, and the use of quotation marks.

In Religion we will be discussing Pentecost, and will dedicate one decade of the Rosary daily for all of the intentions sent into our classroom.

Our Art Show and Spring Concert will be held next Thursday evening, May 10th  in the Aquinas Center.  The first graders have worked hard on their song for the show and they are very proud of their beautiful artistic creations!

I would like to wish all of my first grade moms and grandmothers a very Happy Mother’s Day!

  May God bless you all!

Mrs. Hagerty :)
