Science

In 6th Grade Science we continue our study of oceans. We have studied wave actions, tides, and the moon phases, and will now begin looking at ocean water chemistry and currents. We will then explore the ocean zones and habitats while researching different ocean creatures. A project will be included during our look at the ocean zones. The project will be done in school, but the students will be expected to do their research at home. More information and a rubric will be handed out when we begin looking at ocean habitats. To conclude our unit on Oceans, we will be going on the annual beach clean-up/tide pooling field trip on Monday, June 4th with the 7th graders. More information and a permission slp will be handed out the first week in May.

Remember your son or daughter is in junior high now, and science is a core subject. It is the student’s responsibility to be studying a little every night, as the material is more advanced than previous years.  Students should be reviewing notes, studying definitions, or writing their key terms (vocabulary words) when homework has not been assigned. Bonus points are given on tests for students who have done all of the chapter vocabulary words in back of their notebooks or on index cards. At least 2 days notice is given before quizzes and at least 3 days before tests, so there should be no excuse for waiting until the last minute to study. If your son or daughter is absent the day before a quiz or test (that has been assigned days before) they are still expected to take the test the day they are back in school. The excuse of “but I didn’t have my books” does not work with me as that means the student had waited until the night before to study. I have posted the website for our science textbook below as there are some useful tips and study guides that may be helpful as we continue through the book.
