The 6th graders are currently studying ancient civilizations, beginning with the Fertile Crescent and Mesopotamia. The students will examine the relationships between the land and region and the cultures that developed. The students will study new technologies created by the people of Sumer and debate the importance of being the first to invent something or being the person to improve upon an invention.
During this unit, the students will understand the importance of the first written language and even attempt their own hand at Cuneiform on clay tablets. Each student has chosen a significant word that is meaningful to them, which they will transfer to the clay as if they were a scribe in ancient time.
This unit will help the students develop a basic understanding of early cultures and their influence on subsequent cultures.
