In 8th grade Math we have mastered multi-step equations with grouping and with variables on both sides of the equation. We will now briefly study inequalities before applying everything we have learned as we begin polynomials. We will learn how to classify, write, and evaluate polynomials in standard form, as well as adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, and factoring them. In order you retain the information we have done during the day, you must take your notes home with you every night in order to do the homework and to be ready for class the next day!
Each student should have a notebook filled with notes and examples that we take and do every day. Homework is given out just about every night and is usually worksheets or problems in their notebooks. Their notes should be used when doing homework and all work should accompany their homework if credit is to be received. Homework is a chance for the student to practice and master what they learned in class. If a student is having trouble applying what we had done in class, this is my chance to see where the problem lies. Homework is either all tried, with work shown, for full credit, or incomplete for no credit at all. Homework forgotten at home is also no credit. When we correct homework, we circle the ones that are incorrect and go over them together making sure that there is an understanding of where the student went wrong and that they can correctly complete similar problems. I give a lot of small quizzes so that procedures are kept fresh in their minds. Tests are a compilation of the past quizzes using new problems.
